Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics Engineering

The Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics Engineering program is an interdisciplinary program sharing a common foundation with all programs delivered at the University of Science and Technology during the first year. Such a foundation guarantees that all students master basic sciences.

Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics Engineering students are also introduced to Materials Science. Starting from the third year the students focus on specific areas of nano-technology: nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, nanosystems and nanoconstruction. These sub-disciplines are carefully chosen to align with the activities of the Institute of Nanotechnology in Zewail City. During the third year, all students will be rigorously exposed to the essential background for nanotechnology, including nanofabrication techniques, material characterization, and quantum mechanics. During Years 4 and 5 students start to study specialized advanced courses. All students have access to advanced research.

The Bachelor of Science degree program in Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics Engineering program objectives are derived from the mission and objectives of Zewail City of Science and Technology. The following program educational objectives are oriented to supply the market demand for highly professional nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics engineers in the following focus areas: Nano-VLSI, Nano-Fabrication and MEMS, and Nano-photonics. The program nurtures a tight collaboration with the industry and a commitment to an academic environment to build the talents, and knowledge to help the program graduates to reach the following educational objectives within three to five years of graduation to:

  1. Pursue a successful career in reputed industrial sectors in the field of Nanoelectronics and nanotechnology engineering, and related fields.
  2. Pursue a career in research through local and international graduate programs, with a focus on interdisciplinary areas to lead as entrepreneurs, leaders, and innovators.
  3. Inculcate a citizens-of-the-world culture and commitment to engage in professional development through self-study, professional studies and research in engineering technology to respond to an ever changing global-reality.
  4. Become innovators and specialists in building Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronics based complex hardware/software-based systems

Program Student Outcomes (SOs)

By the time of graduation, students should attain the following SOs:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
  8. An ability to analyse, design, implement micro-electromechanical systems, photonic and nanoelectronics devices, analog and digital electronics, and embedded systems.
