Materials Science

The Materials Science program at the University of Science and Technology (UST) provides academic excellence in advanced material sciences and technologies through an interdisciplinary education that covers materials from various perspectives. After getting a solid foundation in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics during the first two years, the students start to explore advanced techniques for material modeling, synthesis, and characterization. During the fourth year, students can focus on studying advanced materials or materials modeling. These concentrations are supported strongly by advanced research facilities. Students will gain hands-on experience in the development and characterization of novel materials along with applications that have potential social, environmental, and economic benefits. The program is preparing students for careers in industry, education, and research, with the capability to compete and excel in the ever-expanding world of materials science.

 

 

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The educational objectives of the Materials Science program are derived from the mission and objectives of Zewail City of Science and Technology. The program's educational objectives are related to the career and professional accomplishments desired of students three to five years after graduation. The following four-year program objectives have been identified to satisfy constituents’ needs and fulfill the program’s mission.

Within a few years of graduation, materials science program alumni will have:

  1. Gained employment in academic, governmental, or industry in the field of materials science in its broad context ranging from materials synthesis, characterization, and utilization;
  2. Created value by analyzing and designing sustainable solutions to problems involving materials for energy and pollution abatement;
  3. Successfully engaged in advanced studies in materials science and establishing ties to international institutions;
  4. Actively participated in research development in materials science, both in theoretical and experimental fronts; and
  5. Facilitated collaboration and built strong professional relationships by working successfully in multi-disciplinary teams and effectively communicating with a diverse group of stakeholders.

 

Program Student Outcomes (SOs) 

By the time of graduation, students should attain the following SOs:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve broadly-defined technical or scientific problems by applying knowledge of mathematics and science and/or technical topics to areas relevant to the discipline.
  2. An ability to formulate or design a system, process, procedure or material to meet desired needs.
  3. An ability to develop and conduct experiments or test hypotheses, analyze and interpret data and use scientific judgment to draw conclusions.
  4. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  5. An ability to understand ethical and professional responsibilities and the impact of technical and/or scientific solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  6. An ability to function effectively on teams that establish goals, plan tasks, meet deadlines, and analyze risk and uncertainty.
  7. An ability to use the skills and techniques necessary for modern materials science.
