Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineers generate engineering solutions to problems related to the environment such as the pollution of water, air, and soil, as well as waste management and valorization. Environmental engineers identify environmental problems and develop designs for systems that serve societal needs while preserving the environment.
The Environmental Engineering Program at the University of Science and Technology prepares its graduates in three main areas: water, air as well as waste management, and valorization. The students study the design and development of air pollution control systems, water, and wastewater treatment facilities, water desalination systems, waste management solutions, and chemical and biochemical reactors.
The Bachelor of Science degree program in Environmental Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.
Program Vision
The vision of the Environmental Engineering Program is to promote an area of excellence and develop internationally prominent educational and research programs that focus on environmental quality improvements through the application of engineering principles that will adapt quickly to market needs. The program plan to be a key player in promoting environmentally sound local industry and community to comply with the environmental regulations and commitments.
Program Mission
The mission of the Environmental Engineering Program is to educate and train students, future leaders, who are able to develop engineering solutions to the local environmental problems in order to enhance all aspects of environmental sustainability including air, water, soil and other environmental issues such as, mitigation of risks posed by natural hazards, and the consequences of human activities on the environment taking into account the ethical implications of the proposed solutions.
Program Education Objectives (PEOs)
The educational objectives of the Environmental Engineering program are derived from the mission and objectives of Zewail City of Science, Technology, and Innovation. The program's educational objectives pertain to career and professional accomplishments desired of students three to five years after graduation. The following program objectives have been identified to satisfy constituents’ needs and fulfill the program’s mission. Within a few years of graduation, environmental engineering alumni will:
1- Be employed in an environmental engineering (or related fields) or be enrolled in an environmental engineering (or related) graduate program.
2- Add value in the development and evaluation of sustainable solutions to environmental problems via the practical application of fundamental concepts of math, science, and engineering.
3- Promote their professional practice through effective communication with diverse stakeholders and productive collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
4- Participate in professional development activities to advance their careers and better serve society.
Program Student Outcomes (SOs)
The Environmental Engineering Program is designed to provide its graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the workplace and in advanced studies. The student outcomes for the program describe competencies and skills that the students should attain by graduation. The Environmental Engineering Program adopts the ABET required student outcomes as follows:
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
